Nano areas
Master programs, first year (M1) [1]
Several courses in nanosciences or nanotechnologies are offered at the M1 level at the Université Joseph Fourier and the INP-Grenoble, the two higher education institutions in Grenoble. Theses courses allow to build a personalized nanoscience or nanotechnology cursus for students within the disciplines of their choice (physics, chemical physics, chemistry and biology) . In Europe, the framework for most Master programs are disciplinary fields. Special courses have been design to adapt the knowlegde of physics, chistry and biology student to these cross-disciplianry areas.

M2: Master’s second year [2]
Beginning with the M2, several nano cursus are offered around nanociences and nano-technologies. Four master programs are proposed.
The Nanotech Master is an international program common to the INP-Grenoble, the Polytechnico of Torino and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, with 20 students per institutions.
The three other masters are common to the Université Joseph Fourier andthe INP-Grenoble. Since many exchange programs exists with a large number of foreign universities, the program is accessible to foreign students (if they satisfy the prerequisites). Few exceptions aside, the courses are given in French. Enventually the 3N-master could be given in english and be integrated to the european Erasmus-Mundi nanoscience program.
Which Master is right for you ?
The Phys&Ing Master: condensed matter and electromagnetic radiation is a basic program in condensed matter physics where quantum and interaction phenomena are covered in depth without making any particular reference to the nano-objects and nanodevices where they come into play.
Le Master EEATS: micro-nanoelectronics, circuits in a training in Electrical Engineering centered around micro et nano-electronics. Device physics but also the conception tools are at the center of the training.
The 3N Master: Nanosciences, nanomaterials and nanotechnologies focusses on knowledges specific to nanosciences and integrates all the disciplines where they come in namely physics, cheistry biology and engineering. Within these diciplinary majors, one can choose interdiciplinary options and broaden the nano culture. This master should open fully in the fall 2007. Nevertheless some of the majors and options are already operational.
Other cursus with some nano in them
UJF: University certificate: Introduction to nanotechechnologies, nano-objects manufacturing
INP-Grenoble: majeures Phy, Chi, Bio, ISM
Polytech: micro-nano option, ingénieries
M2: Master’s second year
In the framework of the Master Physics and Technologies, the Université Claude Bernard proposes a Nanotechnologies specialisation un (Master Pro) with a broad choice of modules adapted to the professional world.
Within the Chemistry Master, the Université Claude Bernard proposes a specialization Materials including courses o inorganic materials and polymers.
The INSA and the Ecole Centrale de Lyon propose within their master on Rechearch on Information, Devices and Systems sciences, the DEI specialtywhich in its common program as well as in its components and technology option has a strong content in nano-electronics.
[1] M1 is the first year of the Master programs. In Europe, the M1 is the fourth year (Senior) of the university.
[2] After the "LMD (Licence-Master-Doctorate) reform" (the Bologne convergence process for European higher education), former DEA (diplômes d’études approfondies) have been transformed into M2 (Master’s second year). The cursus content have been changed to integrate the M1 and M2 year in a coherent two-year program.
